ATS Resume Basics Without the Panic

Applicant tracking systems matter, but the answer is not keyword stuffing. The answer is clarity, relevance, and clean structure.

An ATS-friendly resume is really a readable resume. The same choices that help software parse your document often help human reviewers move faster.

Use standard section names such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, and Projects. Avoid hiding important information in headers, footers, tables, graphics, or text boxes.

Target each version. A generic resume forces the reader to infer fit. A tailored resume brings the most relevant experience, tools, industries, and outcomes forward.

Use the job description responsibly. If the role requires Salesforce, Excel, logistics, budgeting, clinical operations, or stakeholder management and you have that experience, name it accurately.

Keep bullets outcome-oriented. Good ATS formatting gets the resume through the door; strong evidence gets the interview.

Save intentionally. PDF is often best for preserving formatting when allowed. If the application asks for Word, follow the instruction.

VCS view: the best resume is both machine-readable and human-persuasive. You need both.
